The years end and finding comfort in Winter.

The dark days of winter invite me to add my favorite scents to a
light bulb ring, cover up with a soft blanket and pull out my
favorite winter books.
Candle light is always a must when the nights are long and
spirits need lifting.

Visiting friends and family are part of my Christmas tradition and
each year this becomes more and more meaningful to me.

an Angel gift for a dear friend.

New sheet metal

I have added some small red flowers to the sheep with the bird.
This was created with peace and harmony in mind, for nature can teach
us these virtues like no other :))

My cat has two kittens climbing in her fur.
I have not yet applied paint to the primed surface, only yellow
crayon has sketched the outlines of the kittens
and their mothers face.
I love to put these sheet metal cats in the window
of my home, it looks like I have many cat friends and keeps my neighbors guessing.

Peace and harmony for the New Year my dear readers and
blogging friends.

Thank you for keeping me company! You are the best! :-))

Silent New Year from where The Deer Come.

Sheet Metal Angel with small Bird
and Three Flowers

Has My Heart Gone To Sleep?
by Antonio Machado

Has my heart gone to sleep?
Have the beehives of my dreams

stopped working, the waterwheel
of the mind run dry,
scoops turning empty,
only shadow inside?
No, my heart is not asleep.
It is awake, wide awake.
Not asleep, not dreaming—
its eyes are opened wide
watching distant signals, listening
on the rim of vast silence.

Small pen drawing from my silent retreat.

Everywhere the deer came,
silently, watchfully
like a hidden part of my self,
like the beginning of a prayer.

I have been making a silent retreat for several years now,
sometimes once, sometimes twice a year
to immerse myself in silence to listen to
the still voice within.
slowly, slowly I bring less and less with me
for I am finding it is all a distraction.

My wish for the New Year is
to recognize my need for outer distractions and slowly
find my way back to
from where the deer come.

Yellow Flower Angel

Yellow Flower Angel was donated to a fundraiser for CITW retreat center.

I am grateful that the Christ in the Wilderness retreat center is available for spiritual renewal.  I will be making another silent retreat later this month at this wonderful place of rolling hills and sacred beauty and reflect on ways to bring a little of this quiet beauty into my life.

Birds. Goats and Bears

Sheet metal birds in branches.

Black Capped Chickadee.

Black Bear goes for a walk.

Last June the Northern Illinois area had a very rare visitor. A black bear was spotted in several counties sleeping in trees, munching on tender spring plants and ambling across fields for much of the month of June.
A few people were frightened but most were delighted to have a rather large teddy bear in their backyard. After a while the bear disappeared and was the topic of discussion in chat rooms, bus rides and probably every diner in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin.

Painted sheet metal bear shows the route he traveled on the reverse side.

Very cold today, I stay inside to paint
a little house.

sometimes when mixing paint, an image
unintended appears,
do you see it on the palette?

Big sister and little brother always together.

Only The Leaves

Spring and summer, the leaves stand back and let the flowers come forward to center stage.

In Autumn it's the leaves turn to shine.....only the leaves.

The Space between Summer and Autumn

The small space between the last days of summer and Autumn have
beckoned me to linger longer when I'm outside doing chores.

Feeling the last warm days and smelling the dry leafy air as I hang laundry
on the clothesline, I can hear crickets in the grass and a Bluejay call overhead.

There is much to do in this period before the cold sets in but I pause every
now and then to sit and savor this moment or take myself for a walk down a lonesome country road .

Late summer and Monarch Butterflies

"The butterfly and I had lit upon,
Nevertheless, a message from the dawn",
Robert Frost

From the egg laid on the leaf of a milk weed, to a tiny larvae, to an adult caterpillar. The exciting stages of a Monarch butterfly.

The Monarch butterfly used to be abundant but now their numbers are declining.
This summer I learned how to help increase their chances of survival by hand raising.

Because the small egg is vulnerable at this stage it is easy to help
ensure survival by bringing the plant with the egg into a protected area and raise the small larvae to a full grown caterpillar.  When the caterpillar reaches maturity it forms a perfect jade green capsule..a chrysalis....a perfect container for the miracle that happens next.

Now the chrysalis is formed and begins to transform the body of the
 caterpillar to a butterfly.

Here she is, an exquisite female.

Butterfly letting go.

A drawing in honor of these beautiful silent creatures.
